As Alexandra tries to conform to her new life, she soon discovers that betrayal lies inside the castle walls. When noblewomen plot against her, Alexandra ends up on the receiving end of Branford’s rage. Earning the trust of her wary husband will be no easy task for the young handmaid.

Branford may know his way around their bedchamber, but he’s finding himself ill-prepared to handle the duties of both prince and husband. His missteps bring down the wrath of the queen, and he will have to do everything in his power to atone for his transgressions. Branford must find a way to open his heart to his new wife if either of them has a chance of overcoming the treachery ahead.

The Seduction by Shay Savage

The Verdict:  Picking up immediately where The Handmaid ended, The Seduction by Shay Savage is everything that makes bodice rippers such an addictive guilty pleasure.

Alexandra is still quite lost in her new role, and Branford is no less inept than before at understanding her very different background.  Of course, Alexandra has observed royalty, but she never had to learn their customs and etiquette, so she continues to blunder her way through everything.  That all comes to a head when Alexandra finds herself the victim of a vicious prank, and Branford flies into a rage.  It takes the queen’s intervention (easily one of my favorite romance novel scenes EVER) to open Branford’s eyes to Alexandra’s plight, not to mention the cattiness of jealous women at court, and that’s where we begin to see something truly blooming between our favorite mismatched couple.

While Branford initially came across as something of a gentleman, in The Seduction, we see a bit of an entitled brat, but that impression is quickly resolved as more of his past is explained, offering a reason for his paranoia regarding traitors and his suspicion of just about everyone except immediate family.  Thanks to the queen, though, he’s forced to take a better look at not only his bride, but at himself as well.  He quickly recognizes his failings with Alexandra and moves to rectify things, spending time with her and opening up to her — and not just because the queen insists upon it.

You’d think that a series that starts with a marriage would quickly lead to the bedroom, but instead, the sexual tension is ratcheted up as Branford very slowly allows their physical relationship to grow.  And I think that’s what makes this such an enthralling read.  The Seduction, like the previous novella in the series, delivers the ultimate damsel in distress, the perfectly flawed white knight, and enough intrigue, flowery words, and royal fantasy to hook any romance fan.  I do think that if I wasn’t fortunate enough to have read the whole thing in its previous form, I would be completely freaking out over the cliffhangers and two-week wait for the next installment, but while I’ve learned to avoid serial novellas like the plague, I have to say this is one series that’s worth bending the rules for.
