With steady patience, Sir Branford teaches his young wife the pleasures that are to be found in their marital chambers. Though still unsure of herself, Alexandra begins to open herself to the possibilities of her new life. As Branford expresses his desire to have more than a simple political marriage, Alexandra begins to see a brand new side of her husband.

Alexandra soon discovers there is more to being Sir Branford’s wife than sharing his bed. When the lives of nobles rest in her hands, she finally begins to understand the importance of her position in the court and in her husband’s life.

This book includes mature subject matter that may not be appropriate for readers under the age of 18.

The Verdict:  In this third book in the Unexpected Circumstances series, things really heat up on both a physical and emotional level between Branford and Alexandra, and it’s pretty much what we’ve all been waiting for since the first book.

Alexandra, though still a bit soft-spoken and unsure of things, is beginning to gain some self confidence, thanks in large part (I’m sure) to Branford’s putting her on something of a pedestal.  The truth is that he’s used to maintaining complete control and wielding an iron fist when necessary, but with Alexandra, he’s having to learn patience — not to mention consideration for those not born into immense privilege.  In many ways, she’s a puzzle to him, and now that he’s more aware of her ignorance when it comes to all things royal court and marriage, he’s clearly enjoying getting to know her better and guiding her in her new life.  It’s more than obvious that these two are forming a strong emotional bond that far surpasses whatever mutually beneficial business arrangement their marriage started out as.

That’s not to say that Branford has completely softened up, though.  He’s still more than a little spoiled, quite paranoid and focused on avenging his parents’ murder, and occasionally a bit harsh with Alexandra.  Were their story set in modern times, I’d be fuming at some of his behavior, but we’re talking bodice-ripper alpha hero here, and I for one did not sign up to read about a perfectly refined gentleman.

True to form, of course, Savage has left The Consummation on a bit of a cliffhanger, something that’s a little darker than what we’ve been reading so far.  If you’ve read this story in its previous incarnation, you probably know what’s coming, but that doesn’t make the wait any easier.  I’m curious to see if Savage strays from the path of her first writing or if Unexpected Circumstances will lead to the same heightened drama some of us got a peek at before.
