Pitcher Dylan Dennings has his future all mapped out: make the minors straight out of high school, work his way up the farm system, and get called up to the majors by the time he’s twenty-three. The Plan has been his sole focus for years, and if making his dreams come true means instituting a strict “no girls” policy, so be it.

Lucy Foster, needlepoint ninja, big sister to an aspiring pitcher, and chicken advocate, likes a little mayhem. So what if she gets lost taking her brother to baseball camp…at her own high school? The pitching coach, some hotshot high school player, obviously thinks she’s a hot mess. Too bad he’s cute, because he’s so not her type.

Problem is, they keep running into each other, and every interaction sparks hotter than the last. But with Dylan’s future on the line, he has to decide whether some rules are made to be broken…

The Perfectly Imperfect Match by Kendra C. Highley

The Hook: Dylan knows exactly what he wants for his future, and he refuses to think about anything else until he reaches his goals.  That leaves no time for distractions and no time for romance, but he can’t seem to get the quirky girl who pushes his buttons out of his mind.  Lucy is just doing her best to be her usual creative, fun self, but life’s thrown her a few challenges, and she’s had to take on some more adult responsibilities that threaten to overwhelm her.  Dylan’s rigid personality doesn’t seem like something she needs, but he takes her mind off everything that’s not going right for her and proves to be exactly the kind of friend she needs…and he’s pretty damned cute, too!

The Verdict: Sometimes the quirky characters in books get a bit on my nerves, like they’re just too odd to be realistic.  But Lucy didn’t come across that way at all.  Sure, she’s a little flighty, but she’s also incredibly loving and loyal, and she’s just doing the best she can to be a kid despite being caught up in adult responsibilities.  With her father deployed, her mother’s health problems, and the business they’re trying to keep in the black, you’d think she’d be completely falling apart.  But while you can definitely see her cracking from time to time, she handles it all really well for a girl her age, and she doesn’t lose herself in the process.

Dylan has got to be the most rigid, determined, single-minded high schooler I’ve ever “met.”  He’s focused 100% on baseball, striving to go straight to the minor leagues, and he just doesn’t give himself the time to be a normal kid.  But Lucy breaks through to him when no one else can, getting him to open up and live a little, and watching their friendship bloom into something more was just so much fun!

Their story isn’t rushed; they don’t just meet and fall obsessively in love.  Instead, it’s just clear that they both need someone, and somehow they fit together in spite of all their differences.  The Perfectly Imperfect Match  is an absolute MUST read if you’re a YA fan.  It’s light, fluffy with some substance, and just so cute that it makes me want to read the whole series again!
