Jet Taylor is the quintessential bad boy. A womanizer. A fighter. Dangerous. The type of guy most girls do their best to avoid. But Zoe Janes is no saint herself. In fact, she sees in Jet the perfect opportunity to distract herself from her responsibilities at home and the mistakes that keep her trapped there. He’s gorgeous, likes to party, and is clearly only interested in having fun—just like Zoe.

The more time they spend together, the harder it is for Zoe to stick to her “fun only” mantra. Jet is getting under her skin, making her believe things could actually be different. She knows they’re both trapped by the sins of their past but Jet is starting to make her think freedom might actually be possible.

And that makes him the most dangerous boy of all.

This book includes mature subject matter that may not be appropriate for readers under the age of 18.

ReasonsToReadZoe’s life is nothing like she thought it would be.  Attending a small community college while nearly everyone else had headed off to college somewhere else, she spends the rest of her time worrying about and taking care of her mother, and avoiding her step-father, and trying to keep her head above water.  Her only real escape is time spent with the few friends she has.  Until she meets Jet.

Jet’s been dealt a pretty awful hand as well.  Since his brother died, his mother spends her days drinking and taking her anger out on Jet.  His father has all but checked out, leaving Jet to handle his mother alone and shoulder all the blame she heaps on him.  Zoe, the girl who calls him out on his cheesy pick-up lines instead of falling for them, is nothing like the girls he’s known, and he can’t get her out of his mind.

Both in need of an escape from their less than perfect lives, Zoe and Jet strike up an unexpected friendship with the agreement that they will keep things somewhat casual.  Of course, it all soon begins to hint at something much deeper.

TheVerdictI was really surprised by how quickly I got into the story.  Of course I expected to like it — why else would I have picked it up?  But I didn’t expect that within just a few pages, I’d be coming up with excuses to stay up even later than usual to finish it.

While both characters had some pretty depressing stories, and there were no miraculous solutions on the way, there was still an underlying theme of hope.  Perhaps it was the way they were both so quickly intrigued with each other, but it felt like even though they were each going through their own personal hells, just having that new distraction of someone else to wonder about — and later someone else to turn to — let a little light in.

Escape in You is not a light read, though, by any means.  Jet is mostly just wonderful, there for Zoe any time she needs him, but both characters are dealing with a hell of a lot more than anyone can reason their way through.  While they do become each other’s escape, they are not immediately each other’s savior, and life gets much darker and more difficult for both of them before it gets any better.  They make mistakes and handle things completely wrong at times, but there’s something wonderful in the way they move from enabling the escape and denial toward actually facing and confronting the darkness that would easily have pulled most people under. What I liked most about it was the messy ending, the way that yes, it is a happy one, but it’s not candy-coated and fluffy.  It’s gritty and real and in line with the less than perfect pair who are perfect for each other.

About Rachel Schurig

My name is Rachel, and I love books!

I love reading them, talking about them, and writing them!

I rarely go anywhere without a book in my hand (or in my bag). I’ll read just about anything, but my favorite genres are chick-lit and young adult. Sophie Kinsella, Gemma Townley, Liz Young, Marion Keyes, Meg Cabot, Jane Green, Harriet Evans, Carole Matthews, Sarah Dessen, and J.K. Rowling are some of my favorite authors.

Recently I decided to take the plunge and direct my love of books into writing my own novels. I’m so happy I did! I find writing to be one of the most satisfying experiences I have ever had! I hope I can share my love of stories and story telling with lots of readers.

When I’m not writing (or reading) I am most likely spending time with family (I have five siblings and seven nieces and nephews) or my dog, Lucy. I have an unhealthy addiction to reality television (Bravo, TLC, and HGTV are my downfalls) and I enjoy watching hockey–go Red Wings! In my free time, I enjoy decorating cakes and baking.

I live in Michigan. I enjoy spending time outside, especially in the forests and by the lakes in the northern part of the state. Camping, hiking, and boating are some of my favorite activities. And, of course, there’s nowhere better to read a good book than out in nature.
