Carter Montgomery spent most of his life blending in, and he liked it that way. It was always better to be seen, not heard. And while a theatric streak and friendly demeanor might have fooled most people, he knew the truth—he was the shy one. The quiet kid most people forgot about. Some might have considered that a bad thing, but those people all wanted to be in the spotlight.
The only place Carter didn’t mind attention was on stage, with The Hellions. Once content in his comfort zone in Seattle, Washington, he only knew three things: confrontation was to be avoided, keeping the peace was priority, and the moment he lost Kate Parker to Professor Ryan Campbell, he had no clue what to do with his life. Playing gigs, working at Pike Place Market, and watching BBC after the love of his life sailed off into the sunset just wasn’t going to cut it anymore.
Desperate to escape his rut, he takes a cue from Kate and chooses a random place to relocate—a small island across the country, where no one knows his name and memories of unrequited love aren’t found at every turn. Just when he thinks he’s found the perfect place to unwind and sink back into the shadows, in bursts Whitney Sinclair, a saucy firecracker who loves life and refuses to settle for second best. Full of contagious energy, she dares him to be brave, convincing him that it might finally be time to tell the world what he wants.
It might be time to make a declaration.
This book includes mature subject matter that may not be appropriate for readers under the age of 18.
Unable to watch the girl he loves fawn over another guy any longer, Carter Montgomery has moved across the country, as far as he can get from what can never be his. Now he can start over, figure out what he wants from life without all the distractions, with a chance at new friends, a new job, and maybe even a new romance.
Whitney Sinclair is no wallflower. Used to going after exactly what she wants, she works hard for what she’s achieved, and achieving the good boy musician seems like a worthwhile goal. As their easy friendship builds and becomes something more, this serial dater has met her perfect match. If only she can get him to let go of the past that’s shaped him and become the man he’s meant to be.
I was super lucky to get to read all three books in the series in a row, and after the first two, I was dying for Carter’s story. He’s been the good guy, the best friend, and in a way, the door mat for far too long, so while his cross-country move takes us away from the familiar, it makes perfect sense. He smoothly transitioned from sweet and adorable to incredibly sexy — without losing the traits that made me fall in love with him in the first place.
He’s the perfect Everyman. He’s not drop-dead gorgeous, doesn’t sport chiseled abs, isn’t made of money, and doesn’t have women falling at his feet. He’s just a guy, a good, decent guy who’s had his heart broken. But as he begins to come out of his despair and create a new life for himself, he becomes every bit the catch he never thought he could be. And sooooooooo swoony!
His relationship with Whitney is a wonderful contradiction. It’s easy going and simple, and it’s a whirlwind — both in and out of the bedroom. But even better than the pretty much perfect romance is watching him make his way past the hurt Kate caused and create his own happily ever after. I kind of feel like if I say too much, I’ll be giving away not only this story but also the previous two, so I’ll just say this…
If you love new adult romance, grab this series now, get comfortable, and start reading. Laundry can wait, dinner can be delivered, but these three utterly addictive and incredibly sweet romances cannot wait. I’ll be posting reviews for the other two soon, and you can bet I’ll be harassing you all to give them a shot.
